Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a child when her father, who was employed as the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother was forced to take on jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. However, she was only in school for two years before taking a break to pursue her acting profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. her path to success. In New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. Then, she worked as an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. There she was able to earn a living in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
